Art over a sofa often looks too small or too high. A simple proportion rule fixes both problems and helps you shop with confidence.
Why this works
Wall art should relate to the furniture below it. When it spans roughly two-thirds of the sofa’s width and sits a hand’s width above it, the two read as a single group.
What you’ll need
Materials at a glance: Tape measure; Paper or cardboard; Painter’s tape. Plan on about 20 min and a budget of free. The full materials list and numbered steps are in the project card below.
How to do it
Measure your sofa and multiply the width by two-thirds to find the ideal width for the art. Hang the lower edge about six to eight inches above the back of the sofa, and use a group of frames if you want a wider arrangement.
Styling tips
- Treat a group of frames as one piece when measuring.
- Center the art on the sofa, not the wall, if they differ.
- Hang at eye level for the middle of the piece, around 57 inches.
