Choosing a Pendant Light Height and Size

Simple measurements for hanging a pendant light so it looks balanced and does not get in the way.

A pendant light can anchor a dining table, kitchen island, or entry. Hung too high it floats, and hung too low it blocks the view. A few rules of thumb make the choice easy.

Why this works

Over a table, a pendant should relate to the table’s size and hang low enough to feel connected but high enough to see across. The right proportions make the whole room look intentional.

What you’ll need

Materials at a glance: Pendant light fixture; Tape measure; Cardboard or paper for a mock-up; Ladder; Electrician for wiring if needed. Plan on about 30 min and a budget of under $120. The full materials list and numbered steps are in the project card below.

How to do it

Choose a pendant about one-third to one-half the width of the table. Hang it so the bottom sits roughly 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, and in the entry, leave at least seven feet of clearance from the floor.

Styling tips

  • Use two or three smaller pendants over a long island.
  • Choose a fixture with an adjustable cord so you can fine-tune the height.
  • Check that the light does not shine directly into seated eyes.
Editor’s note: Hold a cardboard cutout at the planned height and live with it for a day before drilling.
