Large Abstract Canvas You Can Paint Yourself

A beginner-friendly method for making a big abstract painting in colors that match your room.

Large original art is expensive, but abstract painting is surprisingly approachable. With a big canvas and a small palette, you can make something that fits your room perfectly.

Why this works

Abstract art works when it follows a limited palette and uses varied shapes and textures. Working large forgives small mistakes and gives the piece presence.

What you’ll need

Materials at a glance: Large stretched canvas; Acrylic paints in three or four colors; Wide brush and palette knife; Drop cloth; Hanging hardware. Plan on about 2 hrs and a budget of under $40. The full materials list and numbered steps are in the project card below.

How to do it

Choose three or four colors from your room, plus white. Cover the canvas with a base layer, add large shapes with a wide brush or scraper, and finish with a few thin lines. Let the paint dry fully before hanging.

Styling tips

  • Use a palette knife or old card for interesting texture.
  • Step back often to judge the composition.
  • Seal with a clear varnish if the piece will hang in a bright room.
Editor’s note: If you dislike a section, let it dry and paint over it. Acrylics are forgiving.
