Wall sconces make a room feel finished and free up table space, but wiring them is not an option for most renters. Plug-in sconces give you the same effect with a cord and a couple of screws.
Why this works
Wall-mounted light draws the eye up and spreads a soft glow across the wall. It works beautifully beside a bed, a sofa, or a mirror.
What you’ll need
Materials at a glance: Two plug-in wall sconces; Paintable cord cover; Painter’s tape and level; Drill and wall anchors. Plan on about 1 hr and a budget of under $70. The full materials list and numbered steps are in the project card below.
How to do it
Choose sconces with a cord long enough to reach an outlet, mark the height with painter’s tape, and use a cord cover painted to match the wall for a clean finish. Hang them 60 to 66 inches from the floor in most rooms.
Styling tips
- Use a paintable cord cover to hide the cord.
- Hang sconces at equal heights on both sides of a bed.
- Choose a fabric shade for soft light and a metal shade for a focused one.
