Floating shelves look sleek and take up very little visual space. With basic lumber and hidden brackets, you can build them yourself in an afternoon.
Why this works
Plain pine or oak boards sand and stain beautifully, and hidden brackets carry the load while keeping lines clean. The key is anchoring into studs.
What you’ll need
Materials at a glance: Pine or oak board; Hidden shelf brackets; Sandpaper and stain; Drill and level; Stud finder. Plan on about 2 hrs and a budget of under $45. The full materials list and numbered steps are in the project card below.
How to do it
Cut the board to length, sand it smooth, and apply stain or paint. Mount the hidden brackets into studs with a level, slide the shelf onto the brackets, and secure it from underneath.
Styling tips
- Find studs with a stud finder for a secure hold.
- Sand in the direction of the grain.
